GJD-4 Metal Ionic Chelating Polymer for Drilling Fluid



GJD-4 is a novel drilling fluid additive with advantages of both MMH and water-soluble macromolecular polymer. With its exceptional ability to improve flow pattern, increase viscosity, control the fluid loss, hold solid phase and restrict the pulping drilling cuttings, it could dramatically improve the performance of drilling fluid.

GJD-4 offers the following advantages

Be able to improve flow pattern, increase viscous shearing force and dynamic plastic ratio of the drilling fluid, and improve wellbore purification ability;

Has strong capacity to strict the pulping drilling cuttings

Usage

The product has good water solubility and strong compatibility. It can be applied together with other drilling fluid additives in different drilling fluid systems. Usual dosage is 0.1%-0.3%.

Field Cases

1). Application at high mud making vertical wells in Jiangsu Oilfield

The applied field conditions: The average well depth is about 2100m and the main formation is mudstone which characterizes by fine granularity and easy scatter. At the bottom, soft mudstone has high plasticity and is prone to hydration, expansion and hole diameter reduction. There is many fault formations and large dip angle in those zones, which might easily cause brittle blocks。

GJD-4 can control produced slurry of layers, and keep the mud viscosity at 25-30mPa·s, bentonite content below 50g/L and dehydration within lower than 6mL.

Since the GJD-4 mud system is powerful to carry and suspend the drilling cuttings, the well bottom is very clean. Each drilling operation can smoothly reach the bottom. Compared with zwitterionic polymer mud system, GJD-4 mud system has the excellent features such as fast drilling speed, high success rate of electronic logging, low hole enlargement rate and short complex dummy trip etc.

2). Application at liable to collapse inclined wells

The applied field conditions: massive drift sand formations which are easy to collapse and are liable to plug flushing port in the course of drilling Hydration expansion plastic mudstone shrinks easily to cause serious mud-making in this section. Due to the development of micro-fissures and injection water well in maturing field, serious denudation and collapse of the formation exists as well.

After the application of GJD-4, the mud performance became stable and the slurry loss can be easily controlled.

When the “Sanduo” formation with huge produced slurry was drilled, bentonite content was about 45g/L and the screened debris was clean because of the strong inhibition of mud and the steady performance of drilling fluid. In the “Dainan” formation which was originally easy to collapse, with the application of GJD-4, the chipping and collapse cannot be found. During the application process, the field operation showed high viscous shearing force and dynamic plastic ratio, good thinning behavior and good sand-carrying capacity. Therefore, blank nozzle is not found in course of drilling through quicksand type formation, each drilling operation can smoothly reach the bottom, going down and pulling out of the full hole works normally and the time of dummy trip is zero.
